Common myths about suicide:

Talking about suicide is just someone looking for attention: Every suicide threat is serious, it’s more often a cry for help rather than a cry for attention. Always take it seriously and talk it through with the person.

If someone is going to commit suicide, there isn’t anything I can do about it: This isn’t true. Someone who is suicidal feels like they can’t handle what’s going on in their life anymore. Showing them that you’re always there to support them and help in any way you can is a huge comfort.

People who try to commit suicide are weak and selfish: No, they are in pain. Never tell someone who has confided to you about their suicidal thoughts, this just makes them feel even more isolated and incapable of dealing with their pain. 

Suicide is only a resort for the depressed: This is completely, entirely untrue. In fact, a depressed person is less likely to commit suicide than someone just emerging from depression. A depressed person usually has a lack of energy, and someone just going on meds usually doesn’t feel that much better but has more energy and motivation to actually kill themselves. Always watch loved ones for this.

Remember to be open and understand when someone comes to you to talk about their suicidal thoughts. Remember that it is not about you, but the person coming to you for help. Be willing to discuss, and take them seriously. 

If you are considering suicide: Remember that there is hope. Reach out to someone, I guarantee there is someone who would care if you weren’t around anymore. You may feel alone now but things can always get better.
